Theyyam dances are always performed by men, they also endorse
female roles, wearing interesting make up and colorful costumes
accom panied by musical instruments like “Chenda”, “veekuchenda”
(drums), “elathalam” and “kuzhal (horns)” along with country
torches. The main colors used in the make up are red, yellow and
black using only natural cosmetics. The Theyyam dancers often have
headgear made out of coconut leaves & cloth. Theyyam and
associated poojas are typically performed in the sacred places,
mostly in temples (Kavus) of goddesses. Themes are centered on the
goddess and her exploits and victories over the demons. Certain
special communities perform Theyyams. It has numerous deities,
each having their own distinguishing headgear and costumes. This
ritual art form was an integral part of the deeply pious and
ritual based lifestyle of the people of Malabar. |
