The mythology in
epics about the temple and its divine power read as “Even after “Devi Matha” (Bhadrakali) killed
“Darikasura” on this plateau land, she refused to give up her anger and
started the “killing dance” which continued several nights and days. The
prayers of the devotees to stop their “threatening dance” did not bring a
positive result and then they started praying to Lord Siva.Siva, being
pleased on such prayers and appeared before “Devi” and invited her to take a
bath to cool down mentally and physically and dug a lake with his “Thrisoolam”.
Lord Siva along with “Devi” took bath in this “Vadukunda Lake” and made her
mind calm. Then she was given seat on north east part of “Madai Para” to
remain in state and he himself sat and absorbed on “Swayambhoo” at
Vadukunda near the lake. These are the two holy spots where subsequently two
famous shrines viz., Madaikavu and Vadukunda Siva temple had emerged. The
time immemorial customs and practice of rituals connecting these two temples
each other are that the deity of “Devi” from Madaikavu would be taken in
procession to Vadukunda temple, 1 ½ km west to Madaikavu, done the holy dip
in the lake and thus brought back on festival occasion during the month of
March every year. This is called “Pooramkuli festival”. The “swayambhoo” is
believed to be rejuvenated by the Saint Parasuraman, the incarnation of
Lord Vishnu. |
